Columbia has technically passed a park sales tax
ballot issue twice. The first was in November of 2000. That
package included a 1/8 cent tax that had no expiration date and
which could be used for both operations and capital improvements
and an additional 1/8 cent that was to expire in five years
(March of 2006) which was to be used for the purchase and
development of Stephens Lake Park. A ballot issue to extend the
1/8 cent that was to expire in April 2006 for an additional five
years was placed before the voters in November of 2005. That
ballot issue was to fund a 12 million dollar package of various
park and trail capital projects. That extension of the sales tax
was approved by the voters, but will expire in April of 2011. At
this time, we anticipate going back to the voters for an
additional five year extension sometime in mid to late 2010.
